Hearing the name Steel Maid didn’t make any bells ring and I became a bit weary due to this name, as it’s pretty lame. Next to that I think that releases on Karthago Records are mostly miss and rarely a hit. Anyway, after listening to this album and the singer’s style I had to think of American act Ravage who recently released a pretty good album through Metal Blade, so I decided to dig for some more info.
Apparently Steel Maid is a German band and brainchild of former ritual Steel guitarist Dirk Johannsen who indeed asked Al Firicino, a.k.a. Al Ravage, to do the vocals. On bass and drums we find the current Ritual Steel members Björn Bombach (also in Ivory Tower) and Martin Zellmer. Musically this is straight forward heavy metal, not really bad but also far from original. The production isn’t convincing; there’s a lack of impact and that’s something a heavy metal album needs. Typically an album that will sit on your shelf but rarely find its way to your stereo. There are better bands out there and I say that without the intention to declassify Steel Maid.
